What’s the difference between a Life Coach, Simple Living Consultant & Professional Organizer?
A life coach honors that the client is the expert of their life, while the coach is the expert of the coaching process. Life coaching programs often last over a period of time and sessions are often done via telephone or Skype (occasionally they are done in person). They may also be done in groups.
For each life coaching session, the client decides what they would like to focus on and takeaway. Sometimes they may desire a specific action step to take or sometimes they may wish to process through a topic or challenge. Life coaching sessions typically include brainstorming, exploring new ideas and ways forward, determining specific action steps to pursue between calls and support needed to take those steps. When working with a life coach, the client is always involved in doing the work. Life coaches may specialize in one particular area or they may offer a variety of coaching services. I consider myself a ‘Simple Living Coach’ and I specialize in working with women to simplify their homes and lives. You may explore more about life coaching on the International Coach Federation website.
A professional organizer’s role is to work with a client to design systems and processes using organizing principles. Their role includes transferring organizing skills to their clients. An organizer is often considered the “expert” in the relationship, advising and teaching their knowledge to the client. An organizer may work side-by-side with a client or virtually via telephone or Skype. You may learn more about professional organizing on the NAPO website. If you’d like to work with an expert that will teach you how to organize and simplify, I offer Simple Living Consulting services to support this need.
Simple Living Consultant…
A Simple Living Consultant is essentially the same as a Professional Organizer. In my role as a Simple Living Consultant, I share my expertise by giving advice, recommending tools, products, apps and other resources to help you solve your organizing and simplifying challenges. I will listen to your concerns and suggest options that I thinks will work well for you based on my years of training and experience in the simple living and professional organizing world. I offer my consulting services virtually via telephone or Skype and upon request I may meet with clients in Kennebunkport, Maine.
In short, life coaches, consultants and professional organizers all work with clients to achieve their goals. With years of experience in all of these areas, I have the unique ability to help clients simplify their lives from each of these perspectives. If you’re unsure how you’d like to work with me, contact me to figure out what’s best for you!
What does a Life Coach do?
As your coach, I honor that you are the expert of your life. I honor that you have come to coaching because you want to be your best and love your life. I support you in going from good to great. I work with you to discover and utilize your strengths so you can create a life you love.
Coaches do not “fix” their clients. They do not advise or tell clients to do what the coach thinks is best. The coaching relationship is a relationship of equals in that you are the expert of your life and I, as the coach, am the expert of the coaching process. You know what is best for you and I will support you in achieving the life you desire.
As your coach, my role in the process includes:
- Working within the coaching framework to support you in your endeavors.
- Encouraging you and empowering you as you choose your desired intentions and actions
- Listening deeply, including bringing awareness to what I’m hearing in tones of voice and changes in energy.
- Stretching you and supporting you by making direct requests, which you may choose to accept, counter or decline. As your coach, I believe that you will do what is in your best interest.
- Sharing intuitions, inklings and what I’m sensing, giving you the space to use what feels accurate and to discard what doesn’t.
- Brainstorming thoughts, ideas, resources and possible next steps with you in a co-creative way while honoring that you know what is best for you.
- Supporting you through this co-creative process with compassion, empathy, understanding and patience as you access your inner wisdom and broaden and build your own strengths, skills and talents.
- Holding your dreams and desires in the highest regards, reminding you of them when you forget or aren’t able to focus on them.
- Being here for you as you determine what to hold yourself accountable to.
- Providing support between calls via email for you to share challenges, insights, breakthroughs or accomplishments.
How do I work with Lisa as my Life Coach?
Working with me as your Simple Living Life Coach is an exciting, engaging and collaborative way to create the simple life you desire.
First you’ll want to decide if you are truly ready to take action to simplify your life. You’ll want to consider if you have:
- An open mind that’s ready to explore
- A true desire to improve your life
- A willingness to invest in yourself
- The ability to commit to your scheduled calls
If all of the above is a “yes,” congrats! If you’re not quite sure, we invite you to reach out to me for a complimentary 30-minute connection call to explore how you can create these.
Next, you’ll need to consider whether you’d like to work with me individually or with a small group of women. There are benefits to both options, which I am happy to discuss with you. If you’d like to join a group, I invite you to visit the Retreats page to learn more about our small group half day, full day and weekend retreats and the Classes & Workshops page to learn more about our group classes.
If you’d like to work with me individually as your coach, you’ll want to determine how long you’d like to work together. Because lasting change doesn’t happen overnight, I offer 3 month, 6 month and 12 month Life Coaching programs. I also offer individual Consulting sessions and options to add on private half day and full day retreats.
Take the first step…
Begin by contacting me to schedule your complimentary 30-minute connection call. During this call, you’ll get a ‘taste’ of what it’s like to work with me as your Life Coach and you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions about the process and share why you’re interested. This call will give us the opportunity to get to know each other and determine if we are a good match.
Once we mutually decide to move forward with the engagement, I will send you an email that contains additional information about life coaching as well as a Client Agreement, payment information and session scheduling information.
Upon completing and returning this information, you will receive a Client Profile to complete. This will help you begin to assess where you are now, where you want to be and what has you stuck. Clients typically spend between 30-90 minutes completing this profile. They report that it is a very insightful process and they begin to experience some ‘ah ha’ moments while completing this information.
You’ll send this completed profile to me, which I will review prior to your first call. The length of this first call will depend on the program you chose. You’ll come to your first call ready to dive in and explore!
I ask that you find a quiet, comfortable, distraction-free space to be in during the meetings. This will support the creative process!
When you choose to work with me as your Simple Living Life Coach, throughout the coaching engagement, you, as the client, will set the agenda for each call. You’ll choose what you’d like to focus on during each call and what you’d like to take away. You’ll come to each call from a quiet, comfortable, distraction-free space to support your focus throughout the call. You’ll come to the calls prepared to take notes, writing down ideas, insights, next steps and support needed to take action on the discoveries from each call. You may also set some intentions that you would like to pursue as fieldwork before your next call.
Before the next call, you’ll take action on any fieldwork items you establish and you’ll complete a brief Pre-Session Form and send it to me 24 hours prior to your next call. This will give you a chance to assess and celebrate what you’ve done between calls, evaluate anything you haven’t gotten to, reflect on what you’d like to focus on next and provide me with an update.
You’ll then continue on with your calls as outlined in the program you choose, focusing on what you’d like to work on during each call. As part of your desire to simplify your life, some examples of topics you may want to bring to your calls include:
- General life simplifying – how to do more of what you love and less of what you don’t
- Relationship with money – explore your money story and create one that aligns with your life desires
- Life purpose work – discover what fulfills you and makes your heart sing
- Career changes – explore careers that support your desire for a simple life
- Relationships with others – evaluate who you surround yourself with
While brainstorming and coming up with options to move forward in a collaborative way (both the client and the coach work together) is part of the coaching process, sometimes clients find that they simply want me to share my expertise and tell them what I think is best based on my experiences. A lengthy advice-giving discussion like this would take place under the Consulting realm. At any time during a Life Coaching program, you may choose to add on a 90-minute Consulting session to have these types of discussions. Think of it as an “ask the organizer” session where I will tell you all about the tips, tricks, tools and resources that I think might work well for you.
As you near the end of your coaching program, we’ll review and celebrate what you’ve accomplished. You’ll then explore and determine the next steps you’d like to take on your life simplifying journey.
The coaching process is a collaborative, engaging, exciting way to create the simple life you desire! Learn more on the Life Coaching page.

Can I just try one Life Coaching session?
Achieving lasting change takes time. Committing to a program provides you with the time and accountability to achieve your goals. To that end, the coaching programs are 3 month, 6 month or 12 month engagements. It has likely taken many years to get to the point you are at now, so it will take time to make lasting change.
A coaching program allows you time to share where you are now and focus on what you want instead. It provides time and space to explore options while keeping you engaged, invested, focused and accountable as you take action while life rolls forward. If finances are a concern, you may want to consider spending your first few sessions focusing on ways to improve your financial situation. Alternatively, you may want to consider working with me as your Simple Living Consultant which I offer on a per-session basis.
Will you come to my house and help me organize my belongings?
The short answer is no…and here’s why…
Having previously worked as a Professional Home Organizer and a Photo Organizer with individuals in their homes, I found that although each client’s situation was unique, many had similar goals-to live a simpler life with less stuff and more joy. I found that by working with clients on a deeper level, getting crystal clear on what they want in their life and exploring stories and beliefs about their items, it became easier for them to decide what to do with their possessions. Once the mental clutter was cleared, the physical work became easier. Clearing this mental clutter can be accomplished through the life coaching framework.
One of the many benefits of working with a life coach is that you are responsible for taking action on your desires. The more involved you are in the process, the more likely you are to sustain lasting change. Through active participation in the process, you are clearing the mental clutter and taking ownership of your life. This can lead to greater fulfillment overall as the project progresses.
If you want to learn how to organize and simplify and need guidance, direction and advice about tips, tools and resources, I offer Simple Living Consulting services. These sessions are offered in 90-minute increments and give you the opportunity to get answers to your questions, ideas for what to do with certain items and more.
Working with me through a combination of both Simple Living Life Coaching and Consulting can be a very effective way to simplify your home and life without me with you in your home.
In both of these roles, I will be your underlying support system. Working together to figure out what has you stuck in an ‘unsimple’ life, prioritizing next steps and brainstorming ways to make the physical decluttering process fun and doable will all support your success. I also offer options to be available via email between calls for accountability and to work through any challenges you encounter along the way.
If you are in the Southern Maine area and would like to work with me in person, you may inquire about availability for in-person life coaching sessions. Instead of being held in your home, these sessions are held in a neutral, distraction-free environment. From my years of experience, I find that this arrangement creates space for clarity and action. Visit the Retreats page for more information on this approach.
